I don’t believe that people are just born as entrepreneurs or that you’re not a successful entrepreneur because of that “incident” on dead man’s curve the day after your Dad took the training wheels of your bike. I believe that deep-down we’re all entrepreneurs, but the majority of us simply just don’t ever realize it, and for those lucky few that do, they simply never act on the realization, or get discouraged.
So why do many of us never realize we’re actually entrepreneurs? Well, I can’t say for sure, and I am positive that there will be there are many more reasons than the couple I am going to touch on in this post, but I
know that everyone has a really good reason for not exploring their entrepreneurial side, including myself. One of the biggest reasons that most folks never realize that the are indeed entrepreneurs is simply because we all like those stories about the people who just “knew” that they were born to be entrepreneurs and had paper routes and sold lemonade when they were kids, and by the time their were twelve had started at least four businesses all on their own. This kind of stuff makes for great T.V. and helps to sell books, but just don’t fall into the trap of believing that since you would have rather been playing baseball growing up and weren’t reading the business section that you have no chance of becoming an entrepreneur later in life! Another reason that most people don’t realize that they are in fact entrepreneurs is due to the fact that most us of grew up in families where Mom and/or Dad worked their entire lives for someone else and there’s so much more security being an employee. You don’t have to worry about benefits or bonuses, etc. etc. Basically, most of us like that nice little security blanket that a full time job appears to give us, whether it actually exists or not.
Now let’s assume that we’re one of the lucky ones and do in fact realize that we are really entrepreneurs stuck in the daily “rat race” that we call life, what now? You can’t except to go from nothing to everything over-night, but this is in fact what happens to most people. We live in a time where everyone wants instant results and if we don’t get them we become discouraged and just throw up our hands and go onto the next thing. Let me give you an example and see if this sounds familiar. So you’re sitting on your couch watching TV, playing your favourite game console, whatever, pick your poison we all have one, when suddenly out of nowhere you get the big idea, commonly refer to as the “Eureka” or “Aha” moment. You jump off the couch, run to your favourite bookstore and buy a one (or more) of those “How to Start a Successful Business” books and get started. Within a few days the shine of the idea has started to wear off, and you begin to realize just how much work is actually involved in not only starting your business, but running it. This is when it starts, self-doubt creep in, the thoughts of not being able to actually do this start popping into our train of thought and the next thing you know the books end up under the coffee table or in the book-shelf and you quickly forget about them.
So you may be wondering how you can work on being an entrepreneur. Here’s a list of a few things that have helped me in the past,
- Realize that all of us have an entrepreneurially side to us,
- If you want to start a business, make sure that you pick something your really passionate about,
- Take small steps, and accept the fact that there are going to be set backs,
- Create a plan on how you’re going to deal with set-backs as they come up,
- Fine tune your idea by bouncing it off friends and family,
- Start making a plan on how you would like your business to start, and how it will grow,
- Constantly improve your skills, never stop learning, and
- Finally, try to have fun…the more fun you have the better off you’re going to be!
