Protecting your digital assets

I was taught a very expensive lesson this afternoon, and wanted to pass the lesson I learned to my readers. I owned both the .ca and .com extension for the Procrastinating Entrepreneur until June 1, 2008. On that day, I lost my .com domain and was notified in a very friendly email that I could buy back the domain at what I can only assume was a tidy little profit for the other party. When I first realized what had happened I quickly got on the phone with my registrar to see if I had any recourse to get my domain back. To make a long story short through some technical problems and failure to act on a notification (on my part) there was nothing I could do – my favourite domain was now in the hands of someone else.

I quickly decided to purchase the domain back.

The moral of the story is simple – your domain name is a very important asset, and can also have some serious brand value attached to it. Protect it and make sure you deal with any issues concerning it’s registration right away. If you don’t you may find yourself in my position.
