If you live anywhere in the Southern Ontario area then you know exactly what I am taking about. Yesterday (Sunday) we got the biggest snow storm of the season (so far) and I didn’t even bother trying to go anywhere. Now that it’s all over, I wish I had’ve taken some pictures to document the amount of snow that we eventually got…
Anyways, with all this time on my hands I started to think about 2007 and what my plans were for 2008 and I came to the realization that while I enjoy being an “idea guy” I have to manage it somehow. I seem to get distracted always thinking up new ideas and projects while the ones already on the burner suffer from my lack of attention.
So here’s my plan to manage my ideas for 2008.
1. I will get all my ideas down on paper, including even the small ones and prioritize everything on a scale of A, B or C. A being the highest priority while C is the lowest.
2. After prioritizing each idea, I will come up with an overall vision/goal statement for each idea.
3. Create a list of to-do items with milestones for each idea item.
Hopefully, using this system will make 2008 more rewarding than 2007.
Are you an “idea” person as well? Do you have any suggestions on how to manage ideas? Why not post them in a comment.

This is the time of the year to be thinking about this kind of stuff. Here is something that I have been doing to help me along in keeping organized and motivated. Just like you suggested A,B,C and D, but I prefer the 30 days, 60 days, 90 days and 6 month categories. I find it better to focus on getting things done when there is a timetable. In keeping with this time frame idea (and I am sorry because I know this will be off topic), but what I like to do when I am at seminar etc is after I take notes (sometimes there are dozens of pages) I like to use 4 different colour highlighters and you guessed it…I highlight all the things that need to be done or that I want done in the next 30 days in yellow and the 60 day stuff in blue highlighter etc. I don’t categorize the notes while I am writing them because a) I want to focus on what I am writing instead of structure and the other is that it forces me to re-read my notes in order to apply the highlighter to it. Happy planning to everyone out there…fdm
