Leave it to the University of Waterloo to launch something that should have existed in Canadian Universities for sometime now. In September of 2008 the renovated Minota Hagey residence will house 70 of Waterloo’s most entrepreneurial students in what’s being dubbed as the “VeloCity” residence. The idea is to create an environment in which,
“…students, faculty and corporate partners will be active collaborators and beneficiaries of the talent, ideas and innovations that evolve.”
One aspect of the project that really got me excited was the inclusion of mentors for the lucky students. If you know me, you know how much I believe in having a mentor, and how they can really help young entrepreneurs avoid common pitfalls when they are getting started.
Is it just me or is this idea as obvious as it sounds? My question is this, where are the other entrepreneurial innovation centres at the other Canadian universities? I did some quick searching and couldn’t come up with any other program like what the University of Waterloo is offering? Why not? If I missed something, please contact me and let me know! I will be happy to post information about the project here!
Technology has flattened the world and if we don’t start developing centres of innovation quickly we’re going to be left behind – fast! Congratulations to the University of Waterloo for launching this type of project.
